The Message of Song of Songs

I have not had the time to read this yet, but this seems to be an interesting (and more important easy to access and free) article on the message of the Song of Songs by Paul J. Tanner.

If you read it (or you read it already) – feel free to inform us about its contents, strenghths, and weaknesses!

And His Banner Over Me is Love

For a really good explanation and treatement of the somewhat disputed verse in Song of Songs 2:4, see the work of  John Hobbins.  He makes a very strong case (with which I agree) that the traditional translation (banner for degel) is the right one.

Lloyd Carr on Song of Songs

I recently found a very useful website for electronic  Biblical Resources.  It is ‘housed’ at Gordon College (where I used to work part-time in the mail room while studying at Gordon-Conwell) by Ted Hildebrandt.

What is relevant for this website is the info on Song of Songs.  He has a couple of articles posted, but more important, he has posted 4 audio lectures of Dr. Lloyd Carr.  Dr. Carr was a professor at Gordon (I assume he is retired) and wrote a very valuable commentary on Song of Songs in the Tyndalle series.

I hope that you will enjoy his lectures.  I have not had the time to listen to them yet :) :)

A Puritan Commentary on Song of Songs

As I have mentioned in the previous post – I did find what seems to be a great Puritan commentary on Song of Songs.  It can be downloaded from www.puritansermons.com.

This is the comment of the person who maintains that site (a site well worth browsing):

“Some time ago I came across a 1723 edition of Durham’s Commentary on the Song of Songs, and I fell in love with it immediately. I resolved to put the entire book on Fire and Ice. Great stuff, Christ-honoring, warm-hearted preaching. Wonderful.”

Personally – I am making plans to read this work.  Even though the allegoric method has fallen into disrepute, I do have a clear feeling that completely throwing it away is based on modern conceit, and has had some negative consequences for the Christian Church.

More on this in the future.  SHALOM!

SOME USEFUL SITES for SONG of SONGS

I will start the first post by simply pointing out some good and useful sites for the study of Song of Songs.

The websites appear on the right side.   Feel free to explore (just click on the links under Blogroll).

By far the most useful one so far is the one from U Penn.  This one is being maintained by Jay Treat.

Today (March 6, 2008) I just found what seems to be a great Puritan commentary on Song of Songs (by James Durham).  You can download it in PDF if you click on the blogroll J Durham.

If you know any other websites useful for the study of this book – please let me know.  SHALOM.

P.S. The article of Carl W. Ernst under the U Penn link is well worth reading.
